Manchester CT Town Information
Manchester Connecticut was settled in 1672 and was known primarily as a farming community. The town quickly evolved into an industrial center, and in 1838, the Cheney family started what became the world's largest silk mill. The mills, as well as many of the houses of the owners, and homes of the workers were restored are now part of the Cheney Brothers Historic District, which is on the National Historical Registry.
Over the past 10- 15 years Manchester CT has become one of the states largest shopping destinations. The Shoppes at Buckland Hills, which is a traditional enclosed shopping mall is continually expanding and the area around the mall features many of today’s traditional national retailers.
Manchester Connecticut offers much more than shopping as it is home to three museums. The Fire Museum, which is a restored 1901 firehouse building and has firefighting equipment and memorabilia that was used in Colonial times. The Lutz Children's Museum has a collection of small live animals and participatory exhibits. The Old Manchester Museum, which focuses on local history, is operated by the Manchester Historical Society.
Manchester is bordered by the town and cities of Glastonbury, East Hartford, South Windsor, Vernon and Bolton.
